The one concern I might have:
Has anyone shipped a system where /usr/bin/awk is GNU awk, but there is no
gawk command installed? I have this vague recollection that some GNU
utilities like to drop the 'g' unless they're installed on a system with
other utilities. (e.g., GNU make is "gmake" on BSD, but "make" on Linux.)
... Hmm. Even then, I like this better than the current state, because on
such a system, it's quite possible to imagine configure picking up a
historical-SysV nawk, or mawk, instead of finding the awk it really
wants. Nevermind.
